Scholarship for undergraduates with bleeding disorders

I'm passing on this info as it might be of interest to those with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome or Chediak-Higashi Syndrome. The below Foundation offers a scholarship program for undergraduates with bleeding disorders. While the Foundation is active in the Hemophilia community, they seem to also be tuned into general issues surrounding bleeding disorders. From this basic info, I see no reason why HPS'ers or CHS'ers wouldn't qualify, but you'll have to check out the details for yourself. I'm simply passing on the info. Good luck!

Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship Program

WE WILL BE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2011-2012

BEGINNING FEBRUARY 1, 2011 THROUGH APRIL 15, 2011

The Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship Program is an annual competitive educational scholarship sponsored by the Foundation.

This scholarship was created in honor of Beth Carew. Beth was an energetic, bright, loving, and caring woman. She was a person with determination and spunk. She was deeply concerned about her family and her community. She was one of the few women to be diagnosed with hemophilia A. Beth Carew died in 1994 of complications associated with hemophilia.

This special scholarship was created in her memory because she was a model for us all. She was an outspoken advocate for the needs of families with bleeding disorders and for the needs of women who were affected by bleeding disorders in any way.

She was a kind and compassionate soul and a relentless fighter. She lived and died with the challenges of hemophilia. She was truly a woman of whom we all can be proud. We at the Colburn-Keenan Foundation, joined by the Carew family, are proud to offer this scholarship program to young people and adults with bleeding disorders to assist in their efforts to obtain a higher education.

The Scholarship is offered to 10 undergraduate students with bleeding disorders attending colleges or universities in the United States.

Scholarship awards are each in the amount of $4,000 per student per year and are offered on a one-year basis to help students with costs associated with obtaining a higher education degree.

If you are interested in applying for the Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year, please contact the Foundation for an application or use the application form linked below.

Ratner's Cheesecake

Here's another recipe from Toby! Thanks Toby......and I'll get the others posted soon! Ratner's Cheesecake and plain cookies Ratner's was a Jewish dairy restaurant in the lower East Side of Manhattan. This recipe, from my disintegrating, no longer in print Ratner's cookbook, is the closest I've ever gotten to reproducing the rich, heavy cheesecake my mother made when I was a kid. It's worth the time it takes to prepare and every last calorie. Dough Can be prepared in advance. Makes enough for two cakes. Can be frozen or used to make cookies – see recipe below. 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup shortening 1 teaspoon lemon extract 1 cup butter 2 eggs 3 cups sifted cake flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients with hands. Refrigerate 3 -4 hours, or preferably overnight. Filling (for

The next generation with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome

I'm so behind on posting about the trip to Puerto Rico. Since the episode of Mystery Diagnosis on Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome ran right after we got home, it's been a little busy. These, however, are my favorite pictures from Puerto Rico. I know, not pretty senery etc - but these little guys and gals inspire me. They are the next generation of folks with HPS, and if we keep up the hard work, they will live better lives because of it. They motivate me.

Help for one of our newest HPS friends

As many of you know, I have a google alert set up for all sorts of key terms like albinism, pulmonary fibrosis etc. The following was posted on the blog of a friend of Melanie's. Melanie is one of our newest members of the Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome family. Unfortunately, like so many she didn't know she had HPS and the lung disease sort of snuck up on her. Melanie will be 26 years old next week. Perhaps some of us would like to contribute to the fund set up to help her and her family for her birthday. Here's the post: Melanie Hernandez, beloved sister and daughter to Pete, Monique, Cookie, and Bugie, has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, a lung disease occurring in people with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, a very rare disease.Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (“HPS”) is a genetic metabolic disorder. It is characterized by: Albinism, Vision Impairment, Bleeding Disorder, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Lung Disease – Pulmonary Fibrosis. With the family’s research and the recollect
