It’s a Small World

Right up there with Pooh, one of my earliest Disney memories is the song, “It’s a Small World After All.” I remember the song, and I also remember getting in trouble when I was four because I lost the copy of the song that came from Recordings for the Blind. Funny how you can remember getting in trouble for things even when you were small.

Another of the rides we enjoyed (although I couldn’t photograph) was the It’s a Small World ride. You get on a little boat and you float through various regions of the world decorated as though they were on top of a sugary cake. All along the route there are mechanical dolls dressed in national costumes and dancing and singing the “It’s a Small World” song. It’s just so cute – especially for a doll collector like me. I’d have loved to have taken a few of those darling dolls home.

Sometimes it just isn’t about acting your age – it’s about finding your inner child.

When I went to Disney World in 2003 (my only trip there as an adult), a woman on the Small World boat was crying. She said she was totally connecting with memories of being there as a kid, and now she's there with her kids, and it was so emotional for her. I had a similar reaction later in the day when I saw Mickey -- a flood of memories of being there with my Grandma (who passed when I was 10). Disney is a special, memory making place!

Ratner's Cheesecake and plain cookies Ratner's was a Jewish dairy restaurant in the lower East Side of Manhattan. The next generation with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome

I'm so behind on posting about the trip to Puerto Rico. Since the episode of Mystery Diagnosis on Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome ran right after we got home, it's been a little busy. These, however, are my favorite pictures from Puerto Rico. I know, not pretty senery etc - but these little guys and gals inspire me. They are the next generation of folks with HPS, and if we keep up the hard work, they will live better lives because of it. They motivate me.

Help for one of our newest HPS friends

As many of you know, I have a google alert set up for all sorts of key terms like albinism, pulmonary fibrosis etc. The following was posted on the blog of a friend of Melanie's. Melanie is one of our newest members of the Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome family. Unfortunately, like so many she didn't know she had HPS and the lung disease sort of snuck up on her. Melanie will be 26 years old next week. Perhaps some of us would like to contribute to the fund set up to help her and her family for her birthday.
