Where is Waldo, ‘er Heather?

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. When I check my usage log and see that some of you are coming back several times to check in, and I know there’s nothing new to read, the journalist in me just feels bad. Grin! I’ve been avoiding the computer as much as possible for a few days.

With the exception of right now, and late Saturday night, I’ve had a steady headache since Thursday night. It seems worse when I look at the computer screen, so I’ve been restricting my screen viewing to essential tasks i.e. urgent Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome business and stuff for work. Blogging has had to wait. So has checking in with all my friends! Sorry!

What’s up with the headache, you ask? I have no idea. It seems like I’ve had a lot of them lately. My stress level isn’t horrible right now, so I don’t think that’s it. I just saw the eye doctor at NIH, so while it could be eye strain, I doubt it. I have chronic sinus problems so that’s a possible. And, then, there’s the Pirfenidone/placebo. I don’t remember reading about headaches as a possible side effect, but who knows. Then there’s the tummy cramping over the weekend – so maybe it’s a bug.

It seems like it’s always something, always something minor (thank God!) but always something just disruptive enough to my life as to cause a hassle.

Since my headaches have increased, I’ve started taking my Flonaise again. Trouble is, the Flonaise always causes my nose to bleed after about two weeks (probably Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome related as that would cause me to get nose bleeds easily anyway) and today, sure enough, two minor nose bleeds.

I know you’re supposed to take Flonaise regularly, but I just can’t. (At least without some sort of bank roll at a local clothing outlet to replace all the blouses ruined by my looking down to discover my nose is bleeding.) So, when I can tell my sinuses are acting up, I take it and usually it’s enough to beat down the sinus issues for a while. Then I stop, and the cycle starts all over again. Grin!

Anyway, that’s why I’ve got this list that’s a half a page long of topics I want to blog about, and yet – no blogging. Guess I’d better get busy tonight! But, I do have to prepare a few things for interviews tomorrow at work. We’ll see how the night goes.

Ratner's Cheesecake

Here's another recipe from Toby! Thanks Toby......and I'll get the others posted soon! Ratner's Cheesecake and plain cookies Ratner's was a Jewish dairy restaurant in the lower East Side of Manhattan. This recipe, from my disintegrating, no longer in print Ratner's cookbook, is the closest I've ever gotten to reproducing the rich, heavy cheesecake my mother made when I was a kid. It's worth the time it takes to prepare and every last calorie. Dough Can be prepared in advance. Makes enough for two cakes. Can be frozen or used to make cookies – see recipe below. 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup shortening 1 teaspoon lemon extract 1 cup butter 2 eggs 3 cups sifted cake flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients with hands. Refrigerate 3 -4 hours, or preferably overnight. Filling (for...

Some good news about Pirfenidone

Below is a press release from Intermune, the company that makes Pirfenidone. They have essentially reviewed the various clinical trials going on, and decided that Pirfenidone is safe and well tolerated. That would pretty much go along with what we've observed in the HPS community as well. We have a few folks that have been on the drug since the late 90s and continue to do well. Of course, as a journalist, I do have to say consider the source - but at the same time, as someone in a Pirfenidone trial, it's good to know. Results of Comprehensive Safety Analysis of pirfenidone In IPF Patients Presented At European Respiratory Meeting - Analysis shows safety and tolerability of pirfenidone across four clinical trials - VIENNA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- InterMune, Inc. (Nasdaq: ITMN ) today announced that the results of a comprehensive review of safety data from four clinical studies were presented at the 2009 European Respiratory Society Annual Congress in Vienna, Austria...

The next generation with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome

I'm so behind on posting about the trip to Puerto Rico. Since the episode of Mystery Diagnosis on Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome ran right after we got home, it's been a little busy. These, however, are my favorite pictures from Puerto Rico. I know, not pretty senery etc - but these little guys and gals inspire me. They are the next generation of folks with HPS, and if we keep up the hard work, they will live better lives because of it. They motivate me.
