Ice skating

The heat finally let up for a few days, and although I’m feeling completely overwhelmed, I had to let myself play a little. It’s amazing to me what a difference the heat makes to the overall way I feel. When the temperatures suddenly went from triple digits to the upper 70s, or low 80s, it was as though someone had refueled my battery. Suddenly I had boundless energy and tried to catch up on all the things I’d let go because I just didn’t feel up to doing them.

Saturday I went ice skating for the first time in a long time. I was helping out with Adventure Fitness, the camp fire club in my area for blind and visually impaired kids. We’ve got a new crop of little guys that are a lot of fun! But between the increased activities of the last few days, coupled with getting a little carried away at the ice rink, my body is in protest. My legs feel as though they’re cramped from my toes to my torso.

My legs didn’t really hurt when I was skating. But when the bell rang and the session was over, and I sat down and began to untie my skates, suddenly my legs and feet just throbbed. Muscles I’ve long since forgotten about reminded me they’re still alive and kicking! I had laced the skates up tight because they were rentals, and thus the boots were well worn and didn’t offer a lot of ankle support. The blades also could have done with some sharpening, which didn’t help much.

Ice skating makes me feel old though. When I was 12 years old I could jump, and spin, and lift my leg way up in the air. Today there’s no way I’d even think about trying to hike my leg up in the air!!!! I’m pretty sure I’m not flexible enough to do it anymore, even if I could keep my balance.

you shoulda hit the rink when the temp was triple digits. gotta be cooler inside the rink than outside. kill two birds with one stone.

can't believe how prone i am to tendonitis anymore. strained my forearm at work in january, and the pain lasted for three freakin' months! then i tried to pick up the bass guitar again after a long break, and i had tendonitis in my thumb for nearly two weeks.

i'm falling apart....

Ratner's Cheesecake

Here's another recipe from Toby! Thanks Toby......and I'll get the others posted soon! Ratner's Cheesecake and plain cookies Ratner's was a Jewish dairy restaurant in the lower East Side of Manhattan. This recipe, from my disintegrating, no longer in print Ratner's cookbook, is the closest I've ever gotten to reproducing the rich, heavy cheesecake my mother made when I was a kid. It's worth the time it takes to prepare and every last calorie. Dough Can be prepared in advance. Makes enough for two cakes. Can be frozen or used to make cookies – see recipe below. 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup shortening 1 teaspoon lemon extract 1 cup butter 2 eggs 3 cups sifted cake flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients with hands. Refrigerate 3 -4 hours, or preferably overnight. Filling (for...

Some good news about Pirfenidone

Below is a press release from Intermune, the company that makes Pirfenidone. They have essentially reviewed the various clinical trials going on, and decided that Pirfenidone is safe and well tolerated. That would pretty much go along with what we've observed in the HPS community as well. We have a few folks that have been on the drug since the late 90s and continue to do well. Of course, as a journalist, I do have to say consider the source - but at the same time, as someone in a Pirfenidone trial, it's good to know. Results of Comprehensive Safety Analysis of pirfenidone In IPF Patients Presented At European Respiratory Meeting - Analysis shows safety and tolerability of pirfenidone across four clinical trials - VIENNA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- InterMune, Inc. (Nasdaq: ITMN ) today announced that the results of a comprehensive review of safety data from four clinical studies were presented at the 2009 European Respiratory Society Annual Congress in Vienna, Austria...

The next generation with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome

I'm so behind on posting about the trip to Puerto Rico. Since the episode of Mystery Diagnosis on Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome ran right after we got home, it's been a little busy. These, however, are my favorite pictures from Puerto Rico. I know, not pretty senery etc - but these little guys and gals inspire me. They are the next generation of folks with HPS, and if we keep up the hard work, they will live better lives because of it. They motivate me.
