I made the hard decision today not to lug up my Christmas tree from the basement with the accompanying lights, ornaments, wreathes and holly. I love Christmas. Although it isn’t exactly the reason for the season, I also thoroughly love Christmas decorating.
For a single person, I probably go a bit overboard. I just love all of the holiday festive feel of the whole thing. I love the way the apartment looks when the tree is lit and all of my Christmas candles are glowing.
This year, however, I won’t be home for Christmas. By the time I spent a week in New York helping with the Christmas concert, I decided the whole whopping week I’d actually enjoy the decorations being up just wasn’t worth the hours of putting up the tree, and the depressing task of taking it down again. I always find putting away the decorations at the end of the season depressing.
The only decoration I got out was the manger arrangement. It is, after all, the reason for the holiday and the most important of the decorations – far more so than the snowmen or the candy canes.
I decided to use the time instead to organize. I FINALLY have all the study stuff out of my living room and need to move on to things like cleaning out closets etc. I need to do a LOT of deep cleaning around the apartment and my sometimes limited energy could be better put to use there.
Still, not putting up the decorations is in its self just a bit depressing. I love doing it so much. If I just didn’t feel like such a fool when the tree is still up in February, maybe I’d still do it.
