Stock holders in Duracell rejoice!

You all crack me up! To date the two topics I’ve received the most e-mail about were my opinions about the TV drama Gray’s Anatomy and now, Mr. Boom Boom. Oh if Mr. Boom Boom had any idea the attention he’s getting throughout the world!

I’m happy to report that all was bliss in our little apartment complex on Saturday. I know Boom Boom was home because I heard his TV on (at a nice low, normal, level) Saturday evening. When I didn’t hear him stir all day I did start to worry. But, I’m guessing he had quite the hangover after his Friday night jam session.

This evening Boom Boom hasn’t been home. AAAHHHH – bliss! Quiet! Yes!

My earphones, however, stopped working. I panicked. It’s such a pain to return anything when you don’t drive. But, it turns out the on and off switch for the headphone set is separate from the one on the base. So, I’d turned off the base, but not the earphones. The earphones are powered by AAA batteries, so of course, after running for two days they died. I think I need to start buying them in industrial quantities. The stock holders of Duracell should be thrilled. I do use a lot of batteries.

I tried buying the rechargeable kind but they seem to die after barely any use and need to be recharged again. Is it just me? What’s the point of having batteries if what you’re doing is constantly interrupted by battery failure?

I heard someone talking about technology on the radio, and the interviewer asked what he thought the next Big Idea would be. And he said, actually, the most needed product right now is batteries with a decent lifespan (especially for computers).

I go through batteries like crazy too. If you clip coupons at all, there are fantastic coupons for batteries all the time. Just FYI.

Hey Heather, You're certainly not the only one with the rechargeable battery problem. However, I'm not in a huge pickle. I can simply tell Peggy, my manager, I need to buy some batteries and the tripple A batteries come in a package of 12. Since I don't have a huge amount of stuff that runs on them it lasts a good bit. It's the C Cells that will start getting eaten up by what used to be Dad's radio now that the weather's nice and I can take it outside. Did you hear the trick about putting the unused batteries in a bag in your freezer? It makes them not go bad so fast waiting to be used once you've opened a package.

Later,
Kelly

Ratner's Cheesecake

Here's another recipe from Toby! Thanks Toby......and I'll get the others posted soon! Ratner's Cheesecake and plain cookies Ratner's was a Jewish dairy restaurant in the lower East Side of Manhattan. This recipe, from my disintegrating, no longer in print Ratner's cookbook, is the closest I've ever gotten to reproducing the rich, heavy cheesecake my mother made when I was a kid. It's worth the time it takes to prepare and every last calorie. Dough Can be prepared in advance. Makes enough for two cakes. Can be frozen or used to make cookies – see recipe below. 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup shortening 1 teaspoon lemon extract 1 cup butter 2 eggs 3 cups sifted cake flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients with hands. Refrigerate 3 -4 hours, or preferably overnight. Filling (for

The next generation with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome

I'm so behind on posting about the trip to Puerto Rico. Since the episode of Mystery Diagnosis on Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome ran right after we got home, it's been a little busy. These, however, are my favorite pictures from Puerto Rico. I know, not pretty senery etc - but these little guys and gals inspire me. They are the next generation of folks with HPS, and if we keep up the hard work, they will live better lives because of it. They motivate me.

Some good news about Pirfenidone

Below is a press release from Intermune, the company that makes Pirfenidone. They have essentially reviewed the various clinical trials going on, and decided that Pirfenidone is safe and well tolerated. That would pretty much go along with what we've observed in the HPS community as well. We have a few folks that have been on the drug since the late 90s and continue to do well. Of course, as a journalist, I do have to say consider the source - but at the same time, as someone in a Pirfenidone trial, it's good to know. Results of Comprehensive Safety Analysis of pirfenidone In IPF Patients Presented At European Respiratory Meeting - Analysis shows safety and tolerability of pirfenidone across four clinical trials - VIENNA, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- InterMune, Inc.
