This morning I woke up and walked down the small hallway to my kitchen to start the morning and noticed the carpet was wet. I turned on the light to discover water everywhere. There was standing water in the kitchen, in the cupboards, and it had been soaked up by the carpet around the kitchen.
As if I’m not behind enough at work! So, I spent the better part of the morning dealing with soaking up water and overseeing a plumber instead of being at work. Tonight I tried to make up some of the missed time, and did to some extent, but as I’ve got twice as much to do this month – well, it just isn’t pretty.
My cough, which had improved somewhat, was worse today again. I went to a Mexican place down the street for lunch since my water was turned off (and I had to use the bathroom) and my kitchen was torn apart. It seems if I get much exercise, the cough gets going and I seem to have a hard time recovering. I started hacking and everyone in the restaurant was staring at me, probably trying to figure out whether I was choking or not.
Tomorrow I’ll miss still more work because I have a doctor’s appointment. This time, however, someone from my church is taking me – an arrangement I really do hope works out. Typically I work from home on the days when I have doctor appointments because the cab fares are bad enough just getting to the doctor – and work is twice the distance or about $50 away from the hospital. It’s only $20 if I go home.
It never occurs to me to ask for help with things like this, I suppose for a lot of reasons. First, I’m steadfastly independent. Most people take their independence for granted, but I had to earn mine and I don’t give it up easily. It’s been my experience that when you enlist various people to help with things, it always comes at a price. The result is I don’t ask unless I’m really desperate. Well, I’m desperate. These doctor visit cab fares add up fast!

Yep, that's annoying, but sometimes people attach strings and don't even realize it.
And, sometimes by a price I mean things like, you ask someone to help you out with a shopping trip, and next thing you know you're getting a commentary on everything you buy.
Or, the pleasantries associated with running errands with someone else, while more fun, often turn out to take more time and money than if you'd just walked and done the task yourself. If you've got time that's great, but if you're really under the gun, you just want to do what you need to do and get it over with.
Nothing in life is free. But, don't get me wrong. I do appreciate a little help now and then, the occassional free ride to Target or Wal-mart etc. I don't mean to seem ungrateful!
